I'm not one to try to excuse history but I'm not one to hide it either. To be fair, Eisner later expressed regret and dismay that he didn't see a parallel in Ebony and the depictions of Jews at the time that he so abhorred. I have serious doubts that Will Eisner was a racist. He spoke out against it for most of his life which is what makes Ebony a complete mystery. I'm not sure how he could miss the racist tones in appearance and dialogue.
The 1940s were a very different time. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it happened. People thought differently then and the art of the time reflects that.
